Part of Procter Farms, Maunu Pastoral takes its name from the location of the Procter Family origins in New Zealand.

We’ve been dairy farming for over four decades and have brought different farm ownership models to the Australian dairy industry. Our founder, Chris Procter, benefited immensely from the farming models and systems we implement today, and enjoys offering these to others.
A farm manager is an employee who is responsible for farming operations, but Maunu Pastoral retains ownership of all the assets and operating expenses.
Most of our sharemilkers started working as farm managers for us before purchasing their own cows and entering into a partnership agreement.
Typically, a contract milker manages/operates the farm and in return receives a negotiated price per kilo milk solids.
Contract milkers’ financial risk is mitigated with minimal equity required, providing them the ability to start their own business with limited upfront capital but a greater share in the profit of the business due to the extra responsibilities they undertake.
A sharemilking/share farming arrangement involves sharing the farm’s production and income between the sharefarmer and Maunu Pastoral, typically a 50/50 split.
The sharemilker provides the herd of cattle (or a portion thereof) and are responsible for the day-to-day operations while Maunu Pastoral provides the capital outlay for the farm and support.
This means that a sharefarmer can maximise the profitability of their business, within our farming framework. We develop the blueprints and ensure all farms are developed to a high standard.

To support the well-being of the land and our animals, the balance of nature is critically
important to us. We use simple, proven systems developed across the Tasman and in Australia to ensure the well-being of our land, cows and people.
We grow pastures under irrigation, avoiding supplementary feed as much as possible. Yearly soil tests allow us to avoid the overuse of fertilisers. We proudly adhere to all EPA standards. We match our stocking rate and peak feed demand with our pasture growth curve.
We farm with nature, not against her. This means our cows can be outside all year round, grazing fresh pasture. We match our stocking rate and peak feed demand to align with the spring and summer growth of pasture, ensuring 85-90% of all our feed is grass based and
only 10-15% coming from grain.
We calve once a year, to align with the peak pasture growth and ease the impact on our
people. We minimise the cows walk to the dairy and ensure that the tracks are in good condition with soft coverings for their comfort. We have a native tree planting program across all our farms to provide more shade.
